Education

Dr. Xu earned his medical degree from Beijing Medical University (now the Peking University Health Science Center) in 1988. To further advance his specialized surgical expertise, he completed a prestigious international clinical fellowship in 2001 at Beth Israel Medical Center and the Hospital for Joint Diseases in New York, USA, where he focused extensively on adult hip and knee arthroplasty and complex joint reconstruction.

Clinical Experience

Following his graduation, Dr. Xu dedicated his clinical career to the Department of Orthopedics at Beijing Jishuitan Hospital. Over the years, he progressively advanced through the clinical ranks from Resident to his current esteemed positions as Chief Physician and Professor. In September 2023, serving as an elite dispatched expert, he transitioned to Beijing Jishuitan Hospital Liaocheng Hospital (a National Regional Medical Center) to assume the critical leadership roles of Vice President and Director of Joint Surgery. In recognition of his exceptional clinical mastery and enduring contributions, he was appointed as the inaugural Honorary President and Lifetime Professor of Beijing Jishuitan Hospital Liaocheng Hospital in May 2026.

Dr. Xu specializes in the comprehensive diagnosis and surgical management of adult joint disorders. He possesses extensive clinical experience in treating osteoarthritis of the hip, knee, and ankle, as well as developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH) and osteonecrosis of the femoral head. He demonstrates remarkable surgical proficiency in both primary and complex revision hip and knee arthroplasty for severe degenerative joint diseases. Furthermore, he has developed specialized expertise in the treatment of adult acetabular dysplasia, achieving outstanding clinical outcomes through advanced joint-preserving procedures such as periacetabular osteotomy and rotational acetabular osteotomy. As a renowned pioneer in the field, Dr. Xu was among the first surgeons in China to introduce and successfully perform minimally invasive total hip arthroplasty, total hip arthroplasty utilizing the modified Watson-Jones approach, and minimally invasive total knee arthroplasty.

Research & Awards

Dr. Xu is a dedicated clinician-researcher who actively integrates advanced international technologies with innovative domestic clinical practices in the field of joint arthroplasty. He pioneered the novel clinical application of artificial rotating hinge knee joints to treat severe post-operative stiffness following total knee arthroplasty, successfully resolving complex challenges associated with restricted joint mobility. In the realm of complex joint revision surgeries, Dr. Xu has driven significant advancements in bone defect reconstruction utilizing 3D-printed custom prostheses. Most notably, he successfully implemented personalized 3D-printed titanium sleeves for the reconstruction of severe proximal femoral segmental bone defects during intricate hip revision procedures.

Furthermore, serving as a corresponding author and primary investigator, he has led pivotal research on the application of cementless modular prostheses for reconstructing bone defects following lower extremity tumor resections. His extensive scholarly contributions are supported by multiple national and provincial-level research grants, culminating in the publication of numerous peer-reviewed articles in prestigious SCI-indexed and core medical journals globally.
