Dr. Tian is a distinguished orthopedic surgeon and the Chief Scientist for the National Key Research and Development Program. Education

Dr. Tian earned his medical degree from Binzhou Medical University in 1992. He subsequently obtained his master’s and doctoral degrees from Peking University Health Science Center, training under the mentorship of esteemed orthopedic experts Dr. Dang Gengting and Dr. Lou Siquan. To further elevate his clinical and academic foundation, he pursued rigorous postdoctoral research and international fellowships.

From 2000 to 2002, he completed a postdoctoral research fellowship at the NYU Hospital for Joint Diseases in the United States, focusing on the basic research of gene therapy for cartilage injuries. Additionally, he undertook advanced clinical visiting fellowships at Radboud University Medical Center in the Netherlands and Coxa Hospital for Joint Replacement in Finland, significantly expanding his mastery of cutting-edge joint arthroplasty techniques.

Clinical Experience

Following his doctoral graduation in 1997, Dr. Tian commenced his clinical career at the Department of Orthopedics at Peking University Third Hospital, serving successively as an attending physician and associate chief physician before his promotion to chief physician in 2009. In addition to his clinical practice, he has been deeply involved in medical education reform, serving as the Deputy Director of Orthopedic Education since 2014 to innovate talent cultivation models.

In 2018, corresponding with the department’s subspecialization, he was appointed Director of the Division of Joint Surgery. He currently serves as the Deputy Director of the Department of Orthopedics and Director of the Division of Joint Surgery, playing a central role in advancing the institution’s clinical care, medical education, and scientific research.

Clinical Expertise

Dr. Tian specializes in joint arthroplasty for the management of knee and hip osteoarthritis, osteonecrosis of the femoral head, rheumatoid arthritis, and developmental dysplasia of the hip. He demonstrates advanced surgical proficiency in both primary and complex revision joint replacement procedures.

In 2004, he introduced impaction bone grafting to China for the treatment of early-stage osteonecrosis of the femoral head, establishing an effective joint-preserving surgical intervention. Additionally, his clinical scope encompasses minimally invasive arthroscopic surgeries, with specific expertise in anterior and posterior cruciate ligament (ACL/PCL) reconstruction and meniscal repair.

Research & Awards

Dr. Tian serves as the principal investigator for over ten national and provincial-level research projects, including the National Key Research and Development Program and the National Natural Science Foundation of China. He spearheaded the formulation of the 2022 “Surgical Protocols for Hip and Knee Arthroplasty” for the National Health Commission. In collaboration with industry partners, he led the development of a proprietary knee arthroplasty robotic system featuring an original three-axis robotic arm, which achieves highly precise surgical execution and has successfully obtained medical device registration. Dedicated to medical education, he founded the “First Lesson in Orthopedics” humanities course and pioneered a specialized fellowship training system to cultivate emerging surgical talent.

Dr. Tian has authored over 90 peer-reviewed articles as the first or corresponding author, including publications in the Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery (JBJS). His clinical research primarily focuses on osteotomy techniques in total knee arthroplasty, the application of 3D printing in orthopedic education, and deep learning diagnostic systems for osteonecrosis of the femoral head. Additionally, he has co-authored or translated several authoritative orthopedic textbooks and monographs, including “Hip Reconstruction,” “Pathogenesis and Treatment of Osteoarthritis,” “Orthopedic Trauma,” “40 Years of the Exeter Stem,” and “PMMA Bone Cement.”
