Education

Dr. Guo earned his medical degree from Norman Bethune University of Medical Sciences in 1984, following the completion of a specialized six-year English medical program. He subsequently pursued advanced academic training at Peking Union Medical College, where he obtained his Master of Medicine in Orthopedics in 1990 and his Ph.D. in 2008.

To further elevate his clinical and academic foundation, Dr. Guo completed a rigorous postdoctoral clinical research fellowship at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in the United States from 1995 to 1997. Through this international experience, he significantly expanded his global perspective and advanced his mastery of orthopedic research and clinical practice.

Clinical Experience

Dr. Guo has dedicated his extensive clinical career to the China-Japan Friendship Hospital. Throughout his tenure, he has progressively advanced into key leadership roles within the institution, serving as the Deputy Director of the Department of Orthopedics and the Director of the Department of Bone and Joint Surgery (Center for Osteonecrosis and Joint Preservation and Reconstruction). He currently serves as a Chief Physician and a Grade II Professor in the Department of Orthopedics and Joint Surgery.

Clinical Expertise

Dr. Guo specializes in the comprehensive diagnosis and treatment of diverse joint disorders, including osteoarthritis of the hip and knee, osteonecrosis of the femoral head, developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH), rheumatoid arthritis, and ankylosing spondylitis. He possesses profound clinical experience in total hip and knee arthroplasty, as well as the surgical correction of complex joint deformities. Furthermore, he offers unique clinical insights and advanced therapeutic strategies for the management of refractory femoral head necrosis and complex lower back pain.

In the specialized field of joint preservation, Dr. Guo demonstrates an exceptional clinical advantage in unicompartmental knee arthroplasty (UKA). As a clinical pioneer in China, he was among the first nationwide to introduce and perform UKA for the treatment of knee osteoarthritis accompanied by varus deformity in 2003. Today, his surgical volume for this procedure consistently ranks among the highest in the country. He is deeply dedicated to advancing the concept of minimally invasive knee preservation, emphasizing the achievement of optimal therapeutic outcomes through minimal surgical trauma. Under his leadership, his clinical team has accumulated extensive expertise across the entire continuum of UKA care, encompassing comprehensive preoperative evaluation, surgical technique refinement, and customized postoperative rehabilitation.

Research & Awards

Dr. Guo is deeply committed to advancing orthopedic science, having spearheaded nearly ten prestigious national and provincial-level research initiatives. His major funded projects include grants from the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC), the Clinical Key Project of the Ministry of Health, the Capital Health Research and Development Special Fund, and the National Key Technology R&D Program of the Ministry of Science and Technology. His scientific research primarily focuses on postoperative cartilage metabolic changes following joint arthroplasty and the pathogenesis of osteonecrosis. As a dedicated clinical educator and Doctoral Supervisor, he has successfully mentored numerous master’s students, doctoral candidates, and postdoctoral fellows.

In recognition of his exceptional contributions to public health and social medical service, Dr. Guo has been honored with several significant accolades. His notable honors include the Advanced Individual in Medical Assistance to Tibet by the National Health System, the Advanced Individual in SARS Prevention and Control in the Capital, and the Outstanding Volunteer of China.

A prolific contributor to orthopedic literature, Dr. Guo has published over 100 articles in domestic and international academic journals, including more than 30 peer-reviewed papers in SCI-indexed publications. Furthermore, he has significantly shaped the academic landscape by serving as the editor-in-chief of the monograph Essentials of Unicompartmental Knee Arthroplasty: Core Knowledge Q&A, which systematically outlines the fundamental principles and clinical practice of this specialized procedure. He has also led the translation and compilation of multiple authoritative orthopedic textbooks into Chinese, including Oxford Unicompartmental Knee Arthroplasty, Partial Knee Arthroplasty, Osteonecrosis, Magnetic Resonance Diagnosis of the Knee Joint (2nd Edition), and Turek’s Orthopaedics: Principles and Their Application.
